Our library is located at: 15212-117 Ave., Edmonton, second floor
The library is currently open on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. We will be switching to our winter hours on October 22nd, 2011 when the library will be open every Saturday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. We will be adding some new additions to our little Icelandic library, thanks to the generous book donations this past year or two. Thank you so much to all the thoughtful folks out there!
INL Reads! Reading Club:
As you may have heard, Independent People by Halldór Laxness is the first 'book of the year' chosen by the INL Reads! organizing committee and announced at the INL Convention held in Edmonton this past April. This classic, initially published in Icelandic in 1934 (Book I) and 1935 (Book II), was translated into English in 1946. The author received the Noble Prize for Literature in 1955 "for his vivid epic power which has renewed the great narrative art of Iceland".
Join fellow Icelanders as we enter the world of Guðbjartur Jónsson, known as Bjartur of Summerhouses, and his struggle for independence. Grit your teeth and take the plunge - it is well worth the first challenging steps into this epic. As described by an anonymous reader: "Laxness paints the sheep farmer's life in bleak tones.... So dismal is the mood at times that the reader feels the imminent onset of seasonal affective disorder. But Independent People also contains moments of pure, distilled beauty so arresting they seem to stand out from the cold landscape like stars in the ink of darkness."
Be sure to join us in the forum of your choice as we discuss this and future 'book of the year' choices. Perhaps you would like to add your comments to the online INL Reads! forum chat at:
http://inlreads.wordpress.com/ or join us in person at our INL Reads! Reading Club
at the library. The first INL Reads! Reading Club for the ICCE will be Saturday, November 12th, 2011 at the library. Whatever your choice, be sure to get into the discussion. It's sure to be an interesting journey!
Ready to get reading? Contact Diane Robock at drobock@telus.net or 780-461-3801 to find out more about the Reading Club or to borrow a copy of Independent People by Halldór Laxness. Have an extra copy of the book to share with others? Let us know and we will help you pass it to an interested reader.
Danish-Icelandic Library Christmas Party:
Join us on December 3rd as we celebrate the season with fellow Icelanders and our Danish friends. Feel free to drop in between 10:00 and 1:00 to get to know some new friends or reunite with those you haven't seen for a while. We will enjoy fellowship, music, food, and drink and - as always - feel free to bring a little something along to add to the food table if you wish, but it's not necessary.
Hope to see you there!
